Franky the fish

img_0085We’ve been petting sitting for my neighbors. Yes, this if the first time in my life I’ve ever been a sitter for a pet of any kind. We don’t even own a pet, so I’m suprised my neihbors asked me of all people. Then again how much trouble is it to care for a betta fish?  However, my husband quickly reminded me that we’ve only had one pet, a betta fish, in our nearly 10-year marriage, and I managed to kill it after two weeks. Who knew you couldn’t put tap water in the fish bowl? I guess I burried that memory far back in my mind for a reason.

To be honest, I was so relieved my neighor didn’t ask my to take care of her dogs that I would have said yes to just about anything. Nothing against her dogs, but they are about as big as I am, and they never seem too happy about seeing me when I go outside.

I knew Mila and Eli would enjoyed having a pet in the house, but I didn’t realize how much my little guy would flip over a fish. Siler, who’s vocablary has really taken off this month, uttered the word “fish” the first day we had Franky. By the next day, he was pointing to the fish bowl and saying “Ganky.”

The next day Franky was elevated to family status. Siler said  ”nite-nite, Ganky” as part of his bedtime routine of  goodnight hugs and kisses to the family.  On Franky’s last day with us, Siler dropped the bombshell. “I ub ooo, Ganky,” he said. What? He’s saying “I love you” to a fish! I’m not sure I like being upstaged by a fish. I haven’t even gotten an “I love you” yet,  but I’ve been practicing with him for weeks to say those three precious words.

Now that Franky has been reunited with his family, I’m waiting for my children start begging for a pet. It’s not  that I dislike pets, but I just like other peoples’ pets more….mainly because I don’t have to be responsible for them.  Maybe someday I’ll change my mind, but for now, I have enough things to clean, feed and potty train. Having another living thing in the house just might set me over the edge to insanity.
