Welcome to my first blog entry! I almost cringe as I say that. I’m not sure why we call it blogging when it’s writing. It seems that everything tied to the Internet needs its own Web-savvy term though.
As a former newspaper writer turned stay-at-home mom, this blog is my attempt to keep my writing skills sharp while also documenting my children’s lives. I’ll never get around to completing baby books for three kids, so these entries will be their best hope of reading about their childhood or of me actually remembering what happened! In addition to sharing my tales of motherhood, I hope to share my faith. After all, no one needs the hand of God more than a mother, especially when you have three kids ages three and under.
After contemplating many names for this blog, I’ve chosen Scattered, Smothered and Covered. Yes, I think motherhood and the Waffle House have much in common. Plus, I really love to think about food!
Scattered refers to the mommy brain you experience with kids. As a mom, you suddenly can’t remember things and walk around aimlessly trying to find the telephone only to find it in the refrigerator. It also describes the array of toys that are scattered about the house and picking up and tripping over every day.
Smothered is a nod to the no privacy zone you enter once becoming a mom. At any given time of the day, little ones in constant need of attention smother you. If they’re not on you, they are following you as close as your shadow. Gone are the days, at least for a few years, of being able to pee in privacy.
Covered refers to the fact that at any point in your day you might be covered in some form of a child’s excretions…pee, poop, spit up or snot. On a really bad day, it may be all four! Before you know it, you are shocked how commonplace it becomes that you don’t even react when it happens anymore. On the flip side, covered refers to all those priceless hugs, kisses and smiles that you receive from your children. Moms are covered in love, and that miraculously makes everything else you go through totally worth it.
