So much for brotherly love

brotherly loveIt’s tough being the baby of the family. I’m sure that’s what my third born (never know what to call him since he followed twins) would tell you if he could talk yet. Siler is only 10 months old, but he’s already learning about the trials and tribulations of being the youngest kid in the house. His older siblings are three-year-old twins, and they haven’t been so keen on having a little brother since Siler learned to crawl.

What happened to the brotherly love? When Siler was a newborn, they were fascinated with rubbing his head, giving him kisses and making funny faces at him until he’d burst into laughter. Now the balance of power is shifting. Instead of being that cute little blob in the corner, Siler is mobile and exercising his independence. Mila and Eli used to be able to control how much interaction they wanted with their little brother, and now he’s invading their territory. Our house has become a mini Gaza strip. Siler has the audacity to pick up their toys! Those of you who are around three-year-olds much know that sharing isn’t high on their priority list. Each day brings pushing, shoving and a few tears.

I’m sure Siler will blurt out his first word soon, and I’m beginning to wonder if it will be an emphatic “no.” The poor little guy hears that word multiple times a day from his big brother and sister. If adversity truly builds character, Siler is on his way to becoming a pint-sized version of Mother Theresa.

At times Mila and Eli will call a ceasefire and invite Siler to play with them. Even then he’s reduced to the part of playing a dog as they pat him on his head and say, “You a nice doggie.” He doesn’t seem to mind. You can tell he longs to be part of the action by how rapidly he scoots across the floor to be where they are. I suppose there will be plenty of opportunity for payback in the future. Just wait until he’s walking!
