She’s too smart for her own good. Yes, that’s my daughter for you. Mila is insightful and inquisitive. She’s not quite four years old yet, and already I can tell she’s not going to be the kind of child who blindingly believes everything I say.
The Easter Bunny is proving to be a much harder sell than I imagined it would be at her tender age. When I was her age, I never remember questioning a thing about the Easter Bunny. In my young mind, he was as real to me as my parents.
On our way to an Easter egg hunt this weekend, I informed my kids that a very special guest would be there—the Easter Bunny. After the initial hoorays were out of the way, Mila began firing out a series of questions. It was like the preschool version of “Meet the Press.” Why is the Easter Bunny coming? Where does the Easter Bunny live? How is he going to get there?
After some creative answering, I thought I’d be home free. “Mrs. Megan and Mrs. Patricia from Mommy’s multiples club know the Easter Bunny. They invited him to come to the Easter egg hunt,” I said. “I think he lives in the forest with all the other bunnies, so he’ll just hop out of the woods when we all get there.”
At the Easter egg hunt luncheon, Mila came up to me and pointed to a door in the room. “I think that Easter Bunny is going to come out that door. That’s the door he came out of last year. I think that’s where he lives,” she said.
I can’t believe she can recall what happened at last year’s egg hunt. Something tells me that this girl has inherited from me a keen memory for the most random details. That can be a blessing and a curse.
Later on at the dinner table that night, I asked my kids about their favorite part of the day. “I saw the Easter Bunny,” shouted Eli.
“Did he talk to you when you sat in his lap, Eli?”
“No, he can’t talk. He’s a bunny,” he said.
Then Mila piped in with her usual frankness. “No, that wasn’t a bunny. It was just a person in a Halloween costume,” Mila said.
My husband and I nearly choked on our food. What can you possibly say in response to that statement?
