The Jungle

The JungleIt never ceases to amaze me how much mischief my twins can get into on any given day. Mila and Eli love to play by themselves upstairs in the playroom at times. They feel so big and independent to play a whole floor level up without me in their business, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

Sound travels well in our house so I can listen to them as I go about my endless to-do list downstairs. If I hear crying, yelling or silence, I know trouble is brewing.

Yesterday I realized it was suspiciously quiet, and then came several loud thuds. What could they have done in such a short amount of time? It turns out that they can do a lot. The dynamic duo should sign up for “Extreme Makeover” because they have a flair for transforming a room in a matter of minutes. They managed to empty the contents of the playroom onto Mila’s bed.

One of them also had the clever idea to empty the contents of Mila’s dresser. My money is on Eli since I just had a little discussion with him last week about ransacking through his dresser drawers during nap time.

The two thuds I heard were of the dresser drawers being pulled out and hitting the floor. Working together like little ants, they drug the drawers onto Mila’s bed, too.

As I walked into the bedroom, I heard them jumping on the bed. “We’re in the jungle, Mommy,” said Eli. “Roooar! I’m a dinosaur.” Then they roared in unison more nonsense about the jungle.

For a second there, I thought they were channeling Guns N Roses. Any minute I expected to hear them screech out, “You know where you are? You’re in the jungle, baby.” That would have been the perfect soundtrack for this moment of insanity.

My first instinct was to get upset, but I put the pause button on my feelings of frustration. I couldn’t get past the absurdity of what I was watching. I grabbed the camera so I could document this ridiculous sight for all eternity.
That probably wasn’t the most responsible thing to do as a parent, but sometimes you have to briefly look the other way in the name of snapping a good photo. After I got my picture, I sternly informed them that their jungle had to be clear-cut from the bed.

There’s never a dull moment at our house with little ones exercising their imaginations, but I wouldn’t trade all the chaos that comes with it for anything. It certainly makes life more interesting. It is a jungle after all.
