To cut or not to cut

img_6631To cut or not to cut….that is the question that has been weighing heavily on my mind. I couldn’t decide if my 21-month-old son had beautiful golden locks or if he was sporting a curly mullet. The first hair cut for a boy is such a big stinking deal, and every person under the sun has an opinion on it. And when curly locks involved, as in the case of my baby boy, people are even more vocal.

Each time I’ve come close to cutting his hair, someone from Team Curls would lay on the guilt trip and say, “Don’t you dare cut those beautiful curls. They may never come back.”  I’d question my decision and decide to wait a little while longer before snipping it. But then someone from Team Scissors would say in the most blunt tone, “Don’t you think it’s about time you gave that boy a hair cut. People are going to start to think he’s a girl.”  It probably doesn’t help matters that he occasionally carries around a pink Hello Kitty purse, but I think the fact that it’s full to capacity with Hotwheels cars cancels out any prissiness, don’t you think?

Clearly,  I don’t want him to look back on his baby photos and resent me for making him look like a redneck baby. Of course, I think the moms putting their babies in those new Huggies jean diapers should have far more to be ashamed about. Seriously, I’d love to be standing at a checkout line to see who’s buying those!  My only crime is not wanting to rush him out of the baby boy stage. Little boys suddenly look so grown up after a true hair cut.

Here’s the verdict, friends. I finally took the plunge and cut his hair. I did it myself because I’m still recovering from the trama of taking my oldest son for his first hair cut. He didn’t like the experience and threw a huge tantrum at the hair salon. The tears and struggle to keep his hands down hardly made the trip worth it. Plus, it’s always embarressing when your child makes a scene….even if the hair stylist claims that kids do that all the time. Then I feel obligated to leave an extra big tip.

I placed Siler’s booster seat on the deck and strapped him in so he couldn’t jump out. I had the bright idea of giving him a popsicle to hold as a distraction from what I was about to do. Plus, he had something to occupy those hands. Then I chopped an inch or an inch and a half off the length, leaving some curls on top and on the sides. I trimmed the curls around his ears ever so slightly….just enough so that he didn’t look The Great American Hero. Does anyone remember that 80s TV classic? I have to say the cut it pretty darn awesome for a novice hair cutter like me. I also think it’s a nice compromise cut and should keep me out of trouble with Team Curls and Team Scissors.img_6627img_66331
